CMS has announced the partial freeze on updates to both the ICD-9 and ICD-10 clinical coding sets is expected to continue through the new ICD-10 implementation date of Oct. 1, 2015.
The last full update to both code sets was made Oct. 1, 2011. Since then, the code sets have been updated only as needed in response to new technologies or diseases. These updates have happened Oct. 1, 2012 and Oct. 1, 2013, and another update is scheduled for Oct. 1, 2014. Limited updates to the ICD-10 code set will happen on the transition date of Oct. 1, 2015, with regular updates resuming Oct. 1, 2016.
No updates to the ICD-9 code set will be issued after Oct. 1, 2014.
