Ryan Smith, CEO of Central Peninsula Hospital in Soldotna, Alaska, recently discussed the challenges his hospital has faced in the past year and how it will overcome them in a report by the Alaska Journal of Commerce.
In the report, Mr. Smith discusses tension regarding labor organizing efforts of non-professional hospital employees, which eventually ended in a vote against unionization, and a fatal shooting at the facility by a former employee. Mr. Smith said that although tensions do exist at the hospital from these events, they have been dealt with in a "very civil and professional manner with the majority of our 660 employees," according to the report.
Mr. Smith also discussed the hospital's plans to address workplace bullying, which include the creation of a policy on workplace bullying, peer groups to respond to bullying allegation and training. He also discussed the hospital's increased security efforts following the incident, which include increased security guard coverage, more cameras to monitor the facility and increased security badge access, according to the report.
