Bills Seek to End Funding for Congressional Health Insurance

Reps. Ron DeSantis (R-Fla.) and Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) have said they will introduce separate bills that would prohibit members of Congress from receiving federal subsidies to cover premiums for health insurance purchased through the new exchanges.

desantisRep. DeSantis's legislation, the "James Madison Congressional Accountability Act" and Rep. Capito's "No ObamaCare Subsidies for Congress Act of 2013" would both stop federal lawmakers from receiving subsidies that aren't available to the general public when buying health insurance through the marketplaces established under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

Reps. DeSantis and Capito have drafted the bills in response to the Office of Personnel Management's recent announcement that Congress members and their staffs will get a subsidy of approximately 75 percent to cover health insurance policies purchased through the exchanges. This subsidy won't be available to other Americans, according to a news release from Rep. DeSantis's office.

Congressional representatives are currently on recess for August. Both representatives plan to introduce their bills when Congress reconvenes in September.
