Bill Would Require Federal Officials to Use PPACA Exchanges

Rep. Bill Posey (R-Fla.) has introduced legislation that would require federal employees that administer the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act to buy health insurance coverage through the marketplaces established under the law.

The Health Care Regulator Accountability Act aims to motivate federal officials to be more judicious in making decisions that affect costs and access to healthcare services, Rep. Posey said in a news release. The legislation would apply to federal agency employees whose duties include writing healthcare regulations, implementing the PPACA or enforcing the reform law.

Rep. Posey believes the PPACA should be repealed, according to the release. The introduction of his accountability bill follows House lawmakers' vote last Friday to pass a spending resolution including a provision to defund the PPACA.

Now that the spending bill is in the Senate's hands, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and some conservative groups have called for Republicans to filibuster the bill to stop Democrats from setting up a vote to amend the legislation to strip it of the provision eliminating funding for the healthcare reform bill. However, Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) has said he won't block a final vote because he supports defunding the PPACA while also funding the government without increasing spending.
