10 Things to Know About athenahealth

By offering a vast array of innovative cloud-based services — including electronic health records, practice management and care coordination — athenahealth has become one of the nation's top ranked health IT software vendors.

Here are 10 things to know about athenahealth:

1. athenahealth is headquartered in Watertown, Mass. CEO Jonathan Bush — nephew of George H.W. Bush and cousin of George W. Bush — and Todd Park founded the company in 1997. Todd Park is the current U.S. chief technology officer and also one of the founders of Castlight Health.

2. In 2013, athenahealth's revenue grew 41 percent to $595 million. Some of the company's increased 2013 revenue is attributable to its purchase of Epocrates, a mobile-health company. Although athenahealth posted earnings of $0.12 a share for the first quarter of 2014 — falling below analysts estimates of $0.17 per share — through investments in innovation and facilities, athenahealth plans for its core revenue to grow 30 percent this year.

3. athenahealth is recognized as a health IT industry leader, as it was ranked the top overall software vendor and top overall physician practice vendor in 2013 by KLAS Research. The rankings were based on survey responses from thousands of healthcare providers. The company was also featured on Forbes' annual list of the nation's fastest-growing technology companies in 2013.

4. More than 50,000 medical providers have gone live using athenaClinicals — the company's cloud-based EHR — and that number is only expected to grow as physicians increasingly seek to improve efficiency. The company already has clients operating in all 50 states.

5. In 2013, 95.4 percent of the medical providers utilizing athenaClincals successfully attested for meaningful use stage 1. The company is the only one in the industry to provide a meaningful use guarantee for successful attestations to meaningful use stage 1 and meaningful use stage 2 to all of its customers.

6. Using athenaCollector — the company's cloud-based billing and practice management service — athenahealth clients collected $11.7 million in 2013. To protect healthcare providers in an ever-changing regulatory environment, athenahealth offers an ICD-10 guarantee ensuring its customers will meet all quality parameters of ICD-10 or they do not have to pay for the service.

7. By coming together with other companies and investors who also have an interest in developing products to increase efficiency in the healthcare system, athenahealth helped form the More Disruption Please program. Through the program, athenahealth has entered into partnerships with more than 20 businesses that now offer their services through athenahealth's network. The company has entered into partnerships with 5 O'Clock Records — a venture-backed company that assists healthcare providers in getting paid for fulfilling medical record requests — and demand force, a program that attracts new patients using online marketing and appointment tools.

8. In February, athenahealth announced the introduction of athenaCoordinator Enterprise, a new service for health systems and hospitals that allows healthcare providers to share medical and clinical information with providers using different EHRs. When patient information is entered at one care setting, the information is updated across all facilities in the health system through the use of athenaCoordinator Enterprise.

9. Furthering its commitment to healthcare innovation, athenahealth has announced its plans to expand and add a flagship research and development site in Austin, Texas. The space will be for those who seek to improve healthcare through innovation — including technology developers, user experience designers and project managers.

10. Although most of athenahealth's services are geared to provide physicians and other healthcare providers with support, the company recently invested in Wellframe's "GPS navigation for patients" that is designed to help patients manage their health post-discharge by providing customized guidance, exercise and medication adherence trackers and symptom alerts. Wellframe received a total of $1.5 million in seed funding from athenahealth and other investors.
