UPMC Tax Challenge Hearing Set for January

Legal arguments related to the city of Pittsburgh's challenge to UPMC's tax-exemption are scheduled for Jan. 8, according to a Pittsburgh Business Times report.

So far, the challenge has centered on whether UPMC has employees. The city contends the organization does meet the definition of an employer, while UPMC claims its subsidiaries directly employ people, while UPMC — as a parent holding company — does not. It said the city would not be able to identify a single person who is employed or on the payroll of UPMC.

UPMC's properties have an estimated value of $1.3 billion. Losing the challenge to the city could subject the organization to as much as $32.4 million in property taxes, along with a gross payroll tax of 0.55 percent for some 40,000 employees, according to the report.
