Specialty Hospital of Washington Capitol Hill and Specialty Hospital of Washington Hadley in Washington, D.C., claim the district has failed to reimburse them $24.7 million in Medicaid costs over the past four years, according to a Washington Post report.
In the suit, Portsmouth, N.H.-based Specialty Hospitals of America, parent company to the hospitals, claims the Department of Health Care Finance has failed to reimburse fully the district's only two long-term acute-care facilities for Medicaid patients, who make up one-third to half of the patients at both facilities, according to the report.
The suit also claims that the Department of Health Care Finance has underestimated the cost of care at each facility and has reimbursed them as nursing homes instead of intensive care providers.
The allegedly deficient reimbursement is resulting in "imminent financial peril," according to the suit, and may cause the hospitals to reduce their medical services.
The Department of Health Care Finance and the D.C. attorney general's office declined to comment on the suit in the report, but Director of Healthcare Finance Wayne Turnage said his office follows the guidelines for Medicaid reimbursement, according to the report.
