Records stolen from shuttered Indiana hospital posted online

Someone broke into the shuttered La Porte (Ind.) Hospital and illegally removed patient records from shredding bins to post on YouTube, Fox affiliate WXIN reported May 5.

The hospital was scheduled for demolition. La Porte Hospital said most of the information found in the bins included patient names, hospital accounts, medical records and some demographic information.

"In a limited number of cases, the records contained a patient's Social Security number, prescription information, insurance information and/or billing information," Valparaiso, Ind.-based Northwest Health, the hospital's owner, told WXIN.

The health system retrieved the bins, sued the owner of the YouTube account and asked YouTube to remove the video.
