New York Bill Bans Smoking Near Hospital Property Lines

A New York bill that would prohibit smoking while on hospital campus grounds and within 15 feet of hospitals' property lines is headed to Gov. Andrew Cuomo's desk, according to a Legislative Gazette report.
The bill would amend a 2009 law that bans smoking on the grounds of hospitals and residential healthcare facilities, including within 15 feet of a facility entrance or exit.

"Healthcare facilities are the places we go to get treatment, heal and recover from serious health concerns. They should not be the place where our health concerns start or are worsened," the bill reads. "No child leaving a hospital after suffering a life-threatening asthma attack should be forced to walk through a cloud of secondhand smoke, a known asthma trigger."
