Personal insurance giant Travelers has filed suit against Meadowlands Hospital Medical Center, a for-profit hospital based in Secaucus, N.J., alleging the hospital committed fraud by not sending car-accident victims to less expensive healthcare venues, according to a Record report.
Travelers alleged Meadowlands charged high prices that "constitute fraud," such as an $18,673 bill for an epidural injection that would have cost only $1,200 at an ambulatory surgery center, according to the report. In addition, the insurer alleged Meadowlands officials colluded with physicians and chiropractors to refer patients to the hospital rather than ASCs.
MHA, the investment firm that owns Meadowlands, said in a statement that Travelers is merely trying to avoid payment, and the lawsuit "is just another unwarranted attack by an insurance carrier on [Meadowlands'] charges under the guise of fraud."
