Kansas Physician Agrees to $1.5M Settlement for Alleged False Claims

A physician from Wichita, Kan., and his company, EECP Heart Center of Kansas, have agreed to pay $1.5 million to resolve allegations of submitting false Medicare claims, according to a Kansas City Star report.

From July 2005 through June 2009, Roger Evans, MD, allegedly submitted claims to Medicare for services provided when he was not physically present. Dr. Evans has said he wasn't aware of the requirement for his presence at each treatment in order to bill Medicare, and he denies wrongdoing, according to the report.

Dr. Evans operated several clinics and provides enhanced counterpulsation therapy, an inpatient service for the treatment of coronary artery disease. He claims the treatments were administered under the supervision of registered nurses. The clinics were shut down after an inspection by the Office of Inspector General in May 2010.
