Kelly Hill, the former emergency department director at Madison, Ind.-based King's Daughters' Health, is accused of stealing hundreds of vials of controlled substances from the hospital earlier this year, according the Madison Courier.
In August, the Drug Enforcement Administration began investigating a suspected theft of controlled substances at the hospital. Ms. Hill was identified as the primary suspect, and hospital officials subsequently did an analysis of her access to controlled substances.
Hospital officials allege Ms. Hill logged into the hospital's EHR system on multiple occasions and entered backdated medication orders for patients who had been discharged from the ED hours or days prior. Hospital pharmacists stated in an affidavit that a patient could not receive medication after discharge.
Ms. Hill, who resigned from the hospital Aug. 21 after refusing to submit to a drug screen request, is accused of stealing $19,900 of controlled substances, including 32 vials of fentanyl, 310 vials of hydromorphone and 71 vials of morphine sulfate, as well as $2,700 of non-controlled substances.
She faces felony counts of unlawful dispensation of a controlled substance; failure to make, keep or furnish records; obtaining a controlled substance by fraud of deceit; and theft.
Ms. Hill entered a preliminary plea of not guilty on Dec. 15.
