Four Michigan Physicians Charged in Alleged Kickback Scheme

U.S. Attorney Donald A. Davis announced that four physicians, one physician assistant and three other healthcare professionals from Michigan have been indicted for conspiracy to violate the federal Antikickback Statute.

The owner of medical clinics in Michigan, along with an administrator and manager from those clinics, allegedly paid the physicians for their referral of patients. Those kickbacks were allegedly disguised as reimbursement for other expenses, like mileage, medical director fees and contractual labor.

The clinics allegedly involved include: Lakeshore Spine & Pain in Ludington and Edmore, and U.S. Rehab Services, which has facilities around the state including Mt. Pleasant. Physicians charged in the alleged scheme are: Lino S. Dial, Jr., DO; Natalie Schutte, PA; Niti Thakur, MD; Andre Blair Smith, MD; and Muhammad Salman Rais, MD.

The charge carries a penalty of up to five years of imprisonment and a $250,000 fine.
