Employees accuse nonprofit air flight company, billing vendor of Medicare fraud

Two former employees have filed suit against Grand Prairie, Texas-based CareFlite, a nonprofit air and ground medical transport provider, alleging the company charged the government for services that were not medically necessary, reports Dallas News.

Former CareFlite employees Aimee Ingold and James Roberts said the company and its billing vendor, Quick Med Claims, consistently overcharged Medicare and Medicaid for services since 2009. Quick Med Claims has been dropped from the lawsuit since it was first filed in 2013.

Ms. Ingold and Mr. Roberts filed suit under the qui tam, or whistle-blower, provision of the False Claims Act. The complaint alleges CareFlite "systematically and fraudulently schemed to up-code ambulance services provided," according to court documents obtained by Dallas News.

CareFlight has asked the judge to dismiss the federal lawsuit due to lack of evidence.
