DaVita Reaches Potential $389M Settlement Over Physician Joint Ventures

Denver-based DaVita HealthCare Partners has reached a framework for a $389 million settlement that would resolve criminal and civil federal investigations into some of its relationships with nephrologists.

DaVita's joint ventures with nephrologists, involving 28 of DaVita's 2,147 dialysis clinics, were targets of investigations by the U.S. Attorney's Office in Denver, the civil division of the U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Office of Inspector General, according to a Denver Post report.

Under the penciled settlement, DaVita would pay $389 million but also unwind 11 of its joint venture arrangements, according to a Denver Business Journal report. Those JVs involve the operations of 28 centers.

Kent Thiry, DaVita's CEO, said he expects the settlement to be finalized within the next few months, according to the DBJ report.
