California physician, medical practice pay $3.8M to settle false claim allegations

A San Diego physician and her former medical practice agreed to pay $3.8 million to settle allegations she knowingly submitted false claims to Medicare and Tricare.

Janette Gray, MD, and her practice, Center for Health & Wellbeing, claimed to operate an alternative, integrative and holistic clinic, according to an Oct. 11 Justice Department news release. She promoted IV infusion therapy, hormone/supplement therapy and other alternative treatments.

The settlement resolves allegations that from 2012 to 2022, Dr. Gray and her practice billed Medicare and Tricare for services that were not covered under either program by disguising the rendering provider, misrepresenting the services provided, unbundling services or billing for services that were not medically necessary.

As part of the settlement, Dr. Gray is excluded from participating in federal healthcare programs for five years, according to the release.
