Milwaukee-based Aurora Health Care settled two HIV discrimination claims for a total of $60,000, according to the Department of Justice.
Two patients alleged that Aurora Health Care violated the Americans with Disabilities Act by discriminating against patients with HIV. The ADA prohibits healthcare providers from treating anyone differently based on disability.
Aurora will pay $30,000 to one of the patients, $15,000 to the spouse of the other patient and a civil penalty of $15,000 to the U.S. government. In addition, the health system has revised its non-discrimination policy and will enhance training on the ADA.
