A Medicare compliance review from the HHS Office of Inspector General found the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics in Madison overbilled the federal government $316,172 by incorrectly billing inpatient and outpatient claims.
According to the report, the 566-bed academic medical center processed errors related to services billed as inpatient that should have been outpatient or observation, incorrect discharge statuses, incorrect Lupron codes and other areas. OIG officials looked at 186 of UW's claims between 2008 and 2010.
UW officials mostly agreed with the OIG's findings, although they disagreed with some claims the OIG said should have been billed as outpatient. UW officials also said some of their incorrect outpatient claims had since been rectified. However, the OIG stood by its findings, and the hospital is expected to repay the full amount.
