Police said they have arrested a man following the assault of six workers at New York City-based Richmond University Medical Center.
The incident occurred at approximately 4 a.m. March 3, according to a statement shared with Becker's from the New York Police Department.
"A preliminary investigation determined that a 19-year-old male being evaluated in the hospital assaulted six hospital workers," the statement said. "Officers were able to take the male into custody without further incident. All victims are in stable condition. The investigation remains ongoing."
Alex Lutz, a spokesperson for the hospital, also confirmed the incident.
"I can confirm that early yesterday there was an incident in our emergency department involving a patient and staff that resulted in injuries to several of our employees," Mr. Lutz told Becker's via email. "Thankfully none of the injuries to our staff are life threatening and they were treated here in our hospital. We are fully cooperating with the NYPD as they conduct their investigation."
The statements from the NYPD and the hospital did not provide the job titles of the workers. According to Fox 5, police said the suspect injured three security guards, punched a nurse, either pushed or punched an EMT, and bit another nurse. Local outlet SILive.com reported that the security guards "suffered minor injuries, including cuts." ABC 7 also reported that a knife was involved in the attacks on security guards.
Police said Devonte Loyce was arrested and charged with assault, resisting arrest, criminal possession of a weapon, and menacing.
