10 recent hospital lawsuits, settlements

From a New York health system suing a payer over withheld payments to the Texas attorney general becoming the first in the nation to sue a physician over transition-related care to minors, here are 10 hospital lawsuits, settlements and legal developments that Becker's has reported since Oct. 8:

1. A federal court ordered Trinity Health Grand Haven (Mich.) Hospital, part of Livonia, Mich.-based Trinity Health, to recognize SEIU Healthcare Michigan as the bargaining agent of about 200 employees and to, upon request, resume negotiations. 

2. Detroit-based Henry Ford Health agreed to a $700,000 settlement over a data breach lawsuit.

3. St. John's Health in Jackson, Wyo., is denying allegations of negligence in a patient's death, arguing the case should not be filed under the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act but as a state malpractice suit.

4. Five former employees at Allentown, Pa.-based Lehigh Valley Health Network filed a proposed class-action lawsuit against the health system Oct. 21 regarding its retirement plan. 

5. The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas agreed to pay $900,000 to resolve alleged discrimination against 6,123 Black applicants. 

6. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is suing a Dallas-based UT Southwestern Medical Center physician over violating state law by providing hormone replacement therapy to 21 minors. This is the first time an attorney general has sued an individual physician over transition-related care for minors.

7. The judge overseeing Dallas-based Steward Health Care's bankruptcy approved a request for reimbursement of $36 million for fees and expenses from the company's lawyers. 

8. Hayti, Mo.-based Pemiscot Memorial Health Systems is facing a lawsuit from a former CEO and another from a company that provided pain management services to its patients.

9. Albany (N.Y.) Med Health System filed a lawsuit against Capital District Physicians Health Plan, accusing the payer of withholding at least $50 million from Albany Medical Center for care the hospital provided to CDPHP beneficiaries. 

10. A judge dismissed the open meetings lawsuit filed by former MetroHealth CEO Akram Boutros, MD, ending the only pending case he has filed against the organization's board.
