From HCA asking to dismiss claims from a lawsuit filed by North Carolina's attorney general to UChicago Medicine being sued for negligence in the death of an Illinois hospital CEO, here are 10 lawsuits, settlements and legal developments Becker's has reported since Feb. 13:
1. UChicago Medicine and one of its cardiothoracic surgeons were named in a lawsuit over the death of Ruth Colby, the former CEO of New Lenox, Ill.-based Silver Cross Hospital.
2. Nurses at Ascension Saint Joseph-Joliet (Ill.), who are members of the Illinois Nurses Association, filed a lawsuit on behalf of themselves and more than 90 of their co-workers who they say were not paid wages they earned for the extra shifts worked by them during the last two-week pay period of November 2023.
3. Twelve families filed a joint lawsuit against Allentown, Pa.-based Lehigh Valley Health Network, alleging the health system and its affiliates falsely accused them of medical child abuse.
4. Oklahoma City-based OU Health paid $140,000 to settle allegations of violating recordkeeping laws in its pharmacy department.
5. Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic is set to go before a jury in July 2025 for a lawsuit filed by a physician who alleges the health system "silenced" him.
6. Three separate Utah lawsuits are seeking a combined $40 million in damages from Dallas-based Steward Health Care after investors allege the health system took funding from five of its state hospitals to pay bills it had acquired across other states.
7. Children's Hospital Colorado in Aurora ceased performing certain gender-affirming surgeries for patients 18 and older in July. Now, seven months later, a patient is suing the hospital over their canceled surgery.
8. NYC Health + Hospitals is one of three plaintiffs in a lawsuit against TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat and YouTube, alleging they have created a youth mental health crisis and seeking to recover related public health costs.
9. HCA Healthcare filed a motion with the North Carolina Business Court, asking it to dismiss claims from the North Carolina attorney general that the for-profit hospital operator violated its 2019 asset purchase agreement for Asheville, N.C.-based Mission Health System.
10. A Suffolk Superior Court judge dismissed families' lawsuits against Boston-based Harvard Medical School related to its morgue scandal involving the theft of human remains from bodies donated for medical research.
