Worcester, Mass.-based UMass Memorial Health Care plans to lay off about 40 employees, with more cuts on the way soon, according to a report by the Worcester Telegram & Gazette.
Affected employees are not involved in direct patient care but are from operations, according to the report, and "there will most likely be more" layoffs, a hospital spokesman told the Telegram & Gazette. Neither a timeline nor details are available on the future cuts.
The system is attempting to close a budget deficit, according to the report. It recently posted an operating loss of roughly $57 million.
