The Different Types of Change-Focused Leaders

In a session at the Becker's Hospital Review Annual Meeting in Chicago on May 15th, Randy Oostra, president and CEO of Toledo, Ohio-based ProMedica, discussed the art of helping people embrace and flourish in the changing healthcare environment.

Change is inevitable in the healthcare industry, and nearly 95 percent of leadership’s role deals with managing change, Mr. Oostra said.

"Changing policies, procedures, approaches, attitudes, somebody's behaviors. Whatever it is, we constantly deal with change," he said.

Two approaches to managing change

Mr. Oostra identified two ways types of leaders based on how they manage change: transformational leaders and innovation leaders. The former transform the organization by setting a vision, and the latter take the vision and "do the job" in an innovative way, he said.

Successful change comes from strategic agenda setting, taking into consideration the two approaches of the aforementioned leadership styles, Mr. Oostra said.

"In strategic agenda setting, we have to ask, 'What's in the hearts and minds of leaders? What are we going to differently? What are we going to drive differently?'"
