Ozarks Community Hospital to Lay Off 60; CEO Blames State's Medicaid Position

Ozarks Community Hospital in Springfield, Mo., plans to lay off up to 60 employees, or about 12 percent of its Springfield-area workforce, according to a Springfield News-Leader report.

Ozarks Community Hospital's CEO Paul Taylor points to the state's decision to not expand Medicaid as the reason for the layoffs, according to the report.

"Even if Missouri expands Medicaid in the future, it will be virtually impossible for us to recapture this loss of capacity," he wrote in a letter, according to the Springfield News-Leader. "I fear Missouri will never recover the ground it is now losing statewide as a result of political posturing."

Ozarks Community Hospital has experienced declining inpatient rates and had a net operating loss of $1.2 million in 2012, according to the report.
