8 Recent Hospital and Health System Layoffs

The following eight hospital and health system layoffs and workforce reductions were covered by Becker's Hospital Review in the past two weeks. They are listed below by number of employees and/or positions affected.

1. Franciscan Alliance to Ax 925 Positions
Mishawaka, Ind.-based Franciscan Alliance, a 13-hospital system with locations in Indiana and Illinois, announced plans to lay off 275 employees and eliminate 650 other positions. This is the second round of layoffs Franciscan Alliance has announced in the past two months. In September, the system cut 125 positions from its Illinois facilities.

2. Phoebe Putney to Eliminate 127 Positions in 2nd Round of Cuts
Albany, Ga.-based Phoebe Putney Health System plans to cut 127 positions as part of a restructuring plan. These layoffs are in addition to the 33 positions the system eliminated earlier this month.

3. Community Medical Center in Montana Cuts Jobs, Furloughs Employees
Missoula, Mont.-based Community Medical Center is eliminating 20 positions through layoffs and retirements and is furloughing about 40 others.

4. St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital in New York Cuts 60 Positions
St. Luke's Cornwall (N.Y.) Hospital eliminated 60 positions through layoffs and attrition. About 35 people were laid off and the remaining positions were vacant.

5. Oaklawn Hospital in Michigan to Trim 21 Jobs
Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall, Mich., plans to eliminate 21 positions. Ten people will lose their jobs because of the workforce reduction; the remaining 11 affected positions are vacant.

6. McLaren Greater Lansing Cuts Positions, Employee Hours
McLaren Greater Lansing (Mich.) Hospital, part of Flint, Mich.-based McLaren Health Care, is eliminating positions and cutting employee hours. Less than 20 managers have been laid off so far.

7. Baxter Regional Lays Off 13
Mountain Home, Ark.-based Baxter Regional Medical Center is laying off 13 employees as it restructures its medical and surgical units in light of declining inpatient admissions.

8. East Liverpool City Hospital Reduces Workforce
East Liverpool (Ohio) City Hospital is offering early retirement packages to some employees and reducing its administrative staff in an attempt to cut costs.
