Mayo Clinic building $49M lab expansion

Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic began construction on a $49 million lab expansion, ABC affiliate KSTP reported April 19.

The expansion will house five clinical testing labs, new space for biopharmaceutical diagnostics, support staff space and an expanded and updated cafeteria for lab staff, the report said.

"Laboratory diagnostics and interpretations are front and center when it comes to the patient journey," William Morice II, MD, PhD, president of Mayo Clinic Laboratories, said in a statement. "The COVID-19 pandemic shined a light on the importance diagnostic testing plays within the overall healthcare system, and we are committed to expanding our testing to meet the needs of patients we serve at Mayo Clinic and through Mayo Clinic Laboratories."

Construction is expected to continue through 2025, the report said.
