New York hospital launches AI-powered cancer screenings

Auburn (N.Y.) Community Hospital is using the artificial intelligence-powered GI Genius intelligent endoscopy tool to help clinicians detect polyps, auburnpub.com reported March 21.

"GI Genius is a breakthrough in colorectal cancer screening. In real-time, it can help physicians identify hard-to-detect and potentially cancerous polyps," Brian MacLaughlin, MD, a surgeon at the hospital, said in a news release. "Decreasing the miss rate of potentially cancerous polyps will undoubtedly save even more lives."

In February, gastroenterology leaders told Becker's that AI has the potential to change colonoscopies. However, they warned that the technology is still in its early stages.
