Can Apple Watch detect irregular heartbeats? Mayo Clinic to find out

Researchers from Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic plan to study whether the Apple Watch can help with early detection of atrial fibrillation.

The randomized clinical trial will include 2,000 participants at high risk for an undiagnosed irregular heartbeat. It will compare patients wearing an Apple Watch and outfitted with the Mayo Clinic ECG Study App to people in a control group receiving usual care.

The study is expected to start in September and conclude in 2026. Mayo Clinic researchers previously found the Apple Watch could be used for identifying patients with a weak heart pump.
