America's Health Insurance Plans is now a member of the Coalition for ICD-10, a group of prominent industry stakeholders and organizations that support the adoption of the new coding system.
"The implementation of ICD-10 is a critical step on the path to a more sustainable health system for consumers," AHIP President and CEO Karen Ignagni said in a news release. "We look forward to working with all members of the Coalition to help advance this important transition."
Earlier this month, the Coalition wrote a letter to CMS Administrator Marilyn Tavenner, pressing CMS to quickly set a new ICD-10 transition date to ease the effects of the recent ICD-10 delay. The Protecting Access to Medicare Act of 2014 — signed into law this month — prohibits the federal government from implementing ICD-10 until at least Oct. 1, 2015. The transition to the new coding system was previously set to take place this October.
Denise Buenning, deputy director of the CMS Office of E-Health Standards, spoke at the American Health Information Management Association ICD-10 Summit last week and indicated HHS will "be making an announcement shortly" about the delay.
