Healthcare as an industry sector accounts for 13 percent of the total workforce in the U.S., according to recent CareerBuilder and Economic Modeling Specialists International data analysis.
In some areas of the country, healthcare makes up a greater percentage of the workforce. In nine states, the sector accounts for more than 15 percent of the total workforce. Those states are:
• Rhode Island — 16.5 percent
• West Virginia — 16 percent
• Pennsylvania — 15.7 percent
• Maine — 15.6 percent
• New York — 15.6 percent
• Massachusetts — 15.3 percent
• Minnesota — 15.2 percent
• Vermont — 15.1 percent
• Connecticut — 15.1 percent
On the other end of the spectrum, Washington, D.C., has the lowest share of healthcare jobs in the nation with 8.4 percent. Nevada has the second-lowest share of healthcare jobs at 8.8 percent. However, Washington, D.C., has the most healthcare jobs per capita, and Nevada has the fastest-growing healthcare workforce among all states.
