Nurses at USC Verdugo Hills Hospital in Glendale, Calif., voted this week in favor of joining the California Nurses Association, according to a Glendale News-Press report.
USC Verdugo Hills employs about 150 nurses, and 72 percent of them voted to join the CNA/National Nurses United. Thirty-eight nurses cast ballots in opposition to joining the union, according to the report.
Joining the union aligns USC Verdugo Hills' nurses with nurses at other USC hospitals, including Keck Hospital in Los Angeles, according to the report. The nurses hope becoming union members will lead to better retirement plans and improved staffing, the Glendale News-Press reported.
The hospital will start preparing to negotiate a collective bargaining agreement with the union once the vote results are verified by the National Labor Relations Board.
