The one-day nurses strike at UPMC Altoona (Pa.) ended Wednesday at 7 a.m. EST, but only 31 nurses were recalled into work directly following the strike's end, according to a Pittsburgh Business Times report.
Not all of the nurses were recalled to work because the hospital brought in temporary nurses, and their contract is for four days, according to a WJAC-TV report. The gradual recall of union nurses will continue until Monday, the PBT reported.
The Service Employees International Union represents approximately 800 nurses at UPMC Altoona, and 182 of those nurses crossed the picket line during the strike, according to the report.
Operations during the strike remained normal. The cost of the replacement nurses was more than $1.6 million, according to the PBT.
