Union Gives WVU Hospitals Another Strike Notice

A union at Morgantown-based West Virginia University Hospitals has once again given the system a strike notice, and workers plan to walk out March 8, according to a WDTV report.

Local 814 of the Laborers' International Union of North America represents about 900 service workers at WVU Hospitals. The union gave two strike notices in December and January. However, strikes were avoided in both instances after the contract was extended. However, the most recent extension will expire Feb. 28.

The two parties have been meeting daily to come to a contract agreement and had reached a verbal agreement Monday to extend the contract contingent on WVU Hospitals signing three agreements, according to WDTV. However, the agreements were not signed by Tuesday, and the union issued a strike notice.

Hospital officials did not immediately return a call for comment.
