SEIU Healthcare PA is attempting to organize employees at the largest employer in the Pittsburgh region: UPMC.
The union is attempting to organize employees in Pittsburgh, Altoona and Erie, according to a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette report.
The push toward unionization has been going on for about two years, and UPMC officials say it has been a "failure."
"There has been neither petition nor vote, and clearly our employees have spoken by choosing not to have the SEIU represent them," a UPMC spokesman told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The spokesperson said the health system has more than 40 years of positive union relationships, suggesting "UPMC is not anti-union," according to the report.
Some of UPMC's employees are already represented by the SEIU, including 800 nurses at UPMC Altoona (Pa.).
Despite UPMC's claims, the SEIU continues its attempts to organize more employees, and some employees rallied in Pittsburgh last week in favor of joining a union, according to the report.
Additionally, the National Labor Relations Board started a hearing in February addressing 48 allegations against UPMC for anti-union activity.
