Nurses at Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center in Torrance, Calif., will soon vote on whether or not to unionize, according to a report by the Daily Breeze.
The nurses have submitted a sufficient number of signed union cards — 30 percent — to start the process of having a union vote, according to a California Nurses Association news release. The National Labor Relations Board has approved the nurses' union representation bid, according to the Daily Breeze.
Now that the bid has been approved, the election must be held within 42 days.
According to the Daily Breeze, a round of layoffs at the hospital triggered unionization effort.
Little Company of Mary in Torrance has about 725 registered nurses. The CNA already represents thousands of nurses in the area, including nurses at Providence Little Company of Mary in San Pedro, Calif., the sister facility of the hospital in Torrance. Both hospitals are part of Renton, Wash.-based Providence Health & Services, which already has 17 unionized hospitals, according to the Daily Breeze.
