A union representing Calais (Maine) Regional Hospital nurses plans to hold a candlelight vigil Wednesday night over recent budget cuts and layoffs at the hospital, according to a Bangor Daily News report.
Layoffs and hour reductions, which occurred earlier this month, affected 86 employees, including 12 members of the Maine State Nurses Association/National Nurses United.
Vanessa Sylvester, a union spokeswoman, said the cuts cause additional patient transfers because of certain nurse shifts being understaffed, according to the report.
The hospital issued a statement to the Bangor Daily News, stating hospital officials believe Calais Regional will continue to provide safe, high-quality patient care. "Cost containment procedures are not unique to CRH, the industry or our region; such moves are underway as the hospitals works to provide the best patient care and medical technology commensurate with our available resources," the statement reads.
