Hospitals and unions: 9 recent conflicts, agreements

Becker's Hospital Review reported the following hospital-union events — including protests and legal issues — on or after Sept. 13.

1. Nearly 100 UPMC workers plan Oct. 4 strike in push for union
About 100 workers from UPMC facilities in Pittsburgh are expected to strike Oct. 4 to gain support for their goal of unionization.

2. Vermont nurses vote no confidence in hospital leadership ahead of contract vote
Unionized nurses at Burlington-based University of Vermont Medical Center have voted no confidence in the hospital's governing board and two top administrators, CEO John Brumsted, MD, and President and COO Eileen Whalen, RN.

3. Michigan Medicine nurses take workplace concerns to university board
Nurses at Ann Arbor-based Michigan Medicine took their complaints of unfair labor practices to the University of Michigan's governing board during its Sept. 20 meeting.

4. UVM Medical Center, nurses reach tentative labor deal
University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington has reached a tentative contract agreement with the union representing about 1,800 licensed practical nurses, registered nurses and nurse practitioners.

5. Maine nurses, hospital strike tentative agreement
Registered nurses and Bangor-based Eastern Maine Medical Center reached a tentative labor deal.

6. Kaiser Permanente workers oppose proposal to outsource 60 gardeners
Healthcare workers in Northern California are speaking out against Oakland, Calif.-based Kaiser Permanente's proposal to outsource landscaping.

7. Michigan Medicine nurses OK option to strike
Nurses at Ann Arbor-based Michigan Medicine authorized their bargaining committee to call a strike.

8. Ohio nurses ratify labor deal with Steward
Nurses at the soon-to-close Youngstown, Ohio-based Northside Regional Medical Center ratified a contract with Dallas-based Steward Health Care.

9. San Francisco nursing facility workers protest, say staffing shortage is hurting patients
Workers from San Francisco-based Laguna Honda Hospital and Rehabilitation Center rallied, alleging that short staffing has hurt employees and patients.
