Brigham and Women's, nurses reach contract agreement

Unionized nurses at Boston-based Brigham and Women's Hospital ratified a new labor deal with the hospital after several months of negotiations, reports The Boston Globe.

The contract, which expires in September 2020, covers more than 3,400 nurses represented by the Massachusetts Nurses Association.

The deal includes a 12 percent raise for nurses with less than two decades of experience and a 4-5 percent raise for nurses at the top of their pay range.

"The process of negotiations was collaborative and respectful as the hospital, and the MNA worked to achieve our mutual goal: ensuring that nurses have a safe, supportive environment in which to provide the best care for patients," Brigham and Women's said in a statement cited by The Boston Globe.

The new contract comes three years after the two parties faced contentious negotiations in 2016. MNA threatened to hold what would've been Massachusetts' largest strike in history, and Brigham and Women's spent millions preparing. Ultimately, the strike was averted, and the two parties reached a contract agreement.
