WakeMed Not Stopping Pursuit for UNC Health's Rex Hospital

The CEO of WakeMed has said efforts to buy UNC Health Care's Rex Hospital in Raleigh, N.C., are far from over, according to a Herald Sun report.

Officials from UNC Health Care in Chapel Hill, N.C., rejected WakeMed's offer to buy Rex for $750 million. WakeMed President and CEO William K. Atkinson said the board's decision did not put an ending to the company's pursuit. He claims the special committee appointed to review the offer never invited WakeMed officials to any meetings, and that UNC officials had already made their decision before they even reviewed the offer.

He said there are other avenues by which WakeMed can purchase Rex, such as the General Assembly.
