Pittsburgh-based UPMC inked a five-year agreement to assist in the planning and operating of an expanded cancer center at a private hospital in Beijing, the health system announced June 27.
Here are three things to know:
1. As part of the deal, UPMC will advise Tahoe Hospital Management on all aspects of operating an advanced cancer treatment center at the 350-bed Beijing Yuho Rehabilitation Hospital. Expanded services at the facility will include medical and surgical oncology, cancer rehabilitation and an oncology clinical research program, among other services.
2. The first phase of the project will involve an onsite assessment by a multidisciplinary team from UPMC, who will advise Beijing Yuho hospital officials on facility design, equipment selection and other aspects. Key hospital staff will also receive cancer care training from UPMC officials in Pittsburgh. Following the initial study, UPMC will provide ongoing clinical and quality assurance guidance, and aim to help the hospital receive Joint Commission International accreditation.
3. UPMC retains several international partnerships and facilities in countries such as Ireland, Italy and Kazakhstan. The health system announced its first medical services agreement in China in 2011, and maintains several affiliations with various healthcare organizations throughout the country.
