The possibility of a new contract between the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and health insurer Highmark is slowly fading away, according to a Patriot-News report.
UPMC's chief legal officer told the Allegheny County Council there is "no chance" a new deal will be struck due to Highmark's acquisition of West Penn Allegheny Health System in Pittsburgh, the report said.
If a new contract is not negotiated by June 30, 2012, the current deal will expire, forcing Highmark customers to pay out-of-network rates for UPMC hospitals and physicians.
