University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson is exploring a public-private affiliation with Naples, Fla.-based Health Management Associates, according to a Clarion Ledger report.
The potential relationship would help attract more physicians to Mississippi while letting the 10 HMA hospitals in the state transfer patients to UMC for specialized medicine, such as its organ transplant program or children's hospital.
Like many states, Mississippi is struggling with a significant physician shortage. A 2008 study showed the state had approximately 175 physicians per capita, when the national median is approximately 240, according to the report.
Officials from the organizations hope to have details of an affiliation by March, according to the report.
