Three South Carolina County Hospitals Consider Partnership to Develop Regional Health System

Bamberg (S.C.) County Hospital, Barnwell (S.C.) County Hospital and Allendale County Hospital in Fairfax, S.C., are considering a possible partnership to create a regional health system and build a new facility to replace the hospitals, according to a Times and Democrat report.

The systems are considering proposals from both Philadelphia-based Health Care Management Partners and Alpharetta, Ga.-based Jackson Hospital Affiliates to help finance and manage the project.

Health Care Management Partners' proposal includes the construction of a 70- to 80-bed hospital as well as the development of primary care and multi-specialty ambulatory care centers under the umbrella of a newly formed Tri-County Regional Health System, according to the report.

If the systems select this proposal, Bamberg County Hospital would consolidate with Barnwell, ceasing operations, after the transaction closes. Barnwell and Allendale would remain in operation until the new regional facility opens, at which point they would be converted in ambulatory centers, according to the report.

Specific provisions of Jackson Hospital Affiliates' proposal were not included in the report.
