Sound Shore, Westchester Medical Center in New York End Merger Talks

Discussions have died for a proposed merger between Valhalla, N.Y.-based Westchester Medical Center and New Rochelle, N.Y.-based Sound Shore Medical Center, according to a report by the Journal News.

Westchester issued a statement explaining negotiations with South Shore terminated Tuesday night without reaching agreement. Sound Shore is the parent company of Mount Vernon (N.Y.) Hospital, which the report notes has the weakest financial performance among the region's hospitals and is expected to close, although no details regarding a possible closure have been disclosed.

Montefiore Medical Center, based in the Bronx, and others have also expressed interest in Sound Shore, according to the report.
