Sioux Falls, S.D.-based Sanford Health is acquiring Black Hills Surgical Hospital in Rapid City, a physician-owned surgical hospital.
Five details:
1. After the deal, Sanford will become the parent organization of the surgical hospital as well as Black Hills Orthopedic and Spine Center. The system will bring on the group's ambulatory surgery center, clinics and urgent care locations.
2. The Black Hills Surgical Hospital and network of facilities will become nonprofit organizations after the acquisition.
3. Black Hills patients will have access to Sanford's specialty and subspecialty care, clinical trials, veterans precision medicine and other benefits.
4. Sanford already had a specialty reference lab in Rapid City to connect patients in the community, but the acquisition solidified its space in the market.
5. The combination between the two entities is expected to close in late November and a regional board of community leaders will govern the operations and strategy of the western South Dakota and Wyoming region of the system. Lew Papendick MD, chair of Black Hills Surgical Hospital, will lead the region as chair while Kyle Wiese will be regional president and CEO.
"As a mission-driven nonprofit health system, our sole purpose is to care for the local community, and every dollar we earn is reinvested back into patient care. We are committed to engaging with local stakeholders to ensure we’re meeting community needs today and well into the future," said Bill Gassen, president and CEO of Sanford Health. "We look forward to establishing a more permanent presence in the region and continuing to work with others to expand comprehensive health care services to patients in western South Dakota, including Rapid City and the surrounding area."
