Physicians in Talks With Company to Save Long Island College Hospital

A group of physicians at Long Island College Hospital in Brooklyn, N.Y., are reportedly in talks with a management company that would take over the beleaguered hospital's operations, according to a New York Times report.

The Concerned Physicians of LICH did not reveal the name of the hospital operator to the Times, but the group did say several companies had expressed interest. The New York State Department of Health would have to approve any change of ownership. LICH is currently part of State University of New York Downstate Medical Center.

This is not the first time whispers of a potential buyer have emerged. In April, a New York Post report said officials from Hackensack (N.J.) University Medical Center and North Shore-LIJ Health System in Great Neck, N.Y., approached the LICH medical staff about taking over the hospital.

Earlier this week, a judge ordered that LICH's former owner, New York City-based Continuum Health Partners, retake control of the hospital, effectively nixing the 2011 deal when Continuum handed LICH over to SUNY Downstate.

LICH has been battling financial struggles for several years, and a state audit from earlier this year said the hospital would be insolvent by May.
