Pennsylvania hospital union issues support for Reading Health System acquisition

The Service Employee International Union Healthcare Pennsylvania, which represents employees at three hospitals involved in West Reading, Pa.-based Reading Health System's five-hospital acquisition, said its members look forward to "building a collaborative relationship" with the health system, according to the Daily Local News.

The SEIU represents employees at Pottstown (Pa.) Memorial Medical Center, West Grove, Pa.-based Jennersville Regional Hospital and Philadelphia-based Chestnut Hill Hospital.

Reading Health System declared its plans to acquire the three hospitals, along with two others in the area, May 30. Officials said they expect to complete the transaction by the end of the summer.

SEIU does not represent employees at Reading Health System, or the two other hospitals involved in the transaction — Phoenixville (Pa.) Hospital and Coatesville, Pa.-based Brandywine Hospital.

SEIU representatives told the Daily Local News the organization will hold a telephone roundtable discussion with union nurses and hospital workers within the next week to discuss hospital merger and acquisition trends.
