The U.S. Department of Justice and Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley are closely scrutinizing Boston-based Partners HealthCare System's bid to acquire South Shore Hospital in Weymouth, Mass., according to a Boston Globe report.
According to the report, government officials are looking at the impact the merger could have on competitors. Partners HealthCare CEO Gary Gottlieb, MD, confirmed the inquiry but characterized it as routine for the pre-merger review process.
Dr. Gottlieb also told the Boston Globe the merger adds to Partners' longstanding clinical relationship with South Shore, according to the report.
