Johnson City, Tenn.-based Mountain States Health Alliance has officially acquired Unicoi County Memorial Hospital in Erwin, Tenn.
Mountain States will now begin making investments in the hospital, such as information technology upgrades, according to a news release. Additionally, the health system will begin a strategic planning process concerning the hospital's role in the community, including plans for a new facility. The planning process is expected to take several months, and a replacement hospital should open in 2017, according to the release.
Mountain States and the hospital board originally reached a definitive agreement in April, but the hospital reconsidered all proposals after the attorney general's office delayed the acquisition in June due to concerns over open meeting laws and lack of approval from local authorities.
The hospital board voted in July to accept Mountain States' proposal to acquire the public-owned hospital, and the Unicoi County Commission in Erwin, Tenn., unanimously approved the sale in August. The Tennessee Attorney General's office gave the transaction the green light last week.
