The LSU board of supervisors unanimously approved memorandums of understanding for partnerships for three hospitals in the LSU Hospital System, according to a report by The Times-Picayune.
The partnerships are for Interim LSU Public Hospital in New Orleans, University Medical Center in Lafayette, La., and Leonard J. Chabert Medical Center in Houma, La.
Under the memorandums of understanding:
• Louisiana Children's Medical Center will operate Interim LSU Public Hospital in New Orleans and a new 424-bed hospital currently under construction.
• Lafayette (La.) General Medical Center will align with the University Medical Center in Lafayette.
• Ochsner Health System in New Orleans and Terrebonne General Medical Center in Houma, La., will partner with Leonard J. Chabert Medical Center in Houma.
According to the report, LSU will maintain ownership of each of the above facilities but relinquish management and operational responsibilities to the new private partners.
According to the report, the partnership plans were developed as a way to extend services and preserve jobs at the three hospitals, as well as to improve healthcare delivery, advance graduate medical training and improve recruitment and medical research efforts.
Over the past few months, the LSU Hospital System has been affected by Medicaid funding cuts totaling up to $152 million among seven of its hospitals. According to the report, $85 million has been cut from the system, which led to a plan to cut 1,500 jobs from the system. These three partnerships should help some employees keep their jobs; however, they will have to reapply with Louisiana Children's, Lafayette General or Ochsner Health, according to the report.
